Youth Tree is a youth-run not-for-profit organisation based in Perth, Western Australia. We use creativity and fun to involve young people in volunteering. Our vision is a world where volunteering is as mainstream as cheeseburgers and breathing.

Youth Tree is looking for passionate, creative, hardworking and friendly people (often more accurately described as "nerds with social skills") aged 16-30 to be fill volunteer staff roles on the TEDxPerth team, the Big Help Mob team and the general Youth Tree team. Positions are for a minimum period of 12 months and will involve an ongoing weekly commitment (except for film crew positions which are on a project-by-project basis). Applicants must be aged between 16 and 30 years old but age is irrelevant if you're within this age bracket. Simply click on the position titles below to view a more detailed position description:

  • Successful applicants will be notified by email by July 20th to arrange an interview.
  • Interviews will take place between July 26th and August 3rd, 2010.

Big Help Mob- Marketing Manager – Someone who is good at making lots of noise in the media and marketing world, passionate about creative approaches to “re-branding volunteering”, thinks strategically and enjoys working with people.

Big Help Mob is Youth Tree's hands-on branch. It's a massive rent-a-crowd of ordinary young people who perform massive feats of strength and stupidity for local not-for-profits and communities in Perth. Big Help Mob's aim is twofold:

  • Be of genuine use to good causes by giving them a sudden one-off burst of people-power
  • Get people who are not already regular volunteers "hooked" on volunteering by giving them the most fun, social and tangibly rewarding experience of volunteering possible

Big Help Mob is looking for passionate, creative, hardworking and friendly people aged 16-30 to join the Big Help Mob Mafia. Positions are for a minimum period of 12 months. Positions are on a voluntary basis and will involve an ongoing commitment of 20-25 hours per week. Applicants must be aged between 16 and 30 years old but age is irrelevant if you're within this age bracket.

What you will gain as the Big Help Mob Marketing Manager:

  • An experienced industry mentor/s who you can bounce ideas off
  • The opportunity to truly define the culture of the organisation. Youth Tree is a start-up so everyone in a position of leadership is a pioneer.

So what would I be doing for 20-25 hours a week?

  • (Initially) Working closely with the Big Help Mob Mafia (leadership team) to “learn the ropes”, and meeting all the existing Youth Tree volunteer staff
  • Bring your awesomeness to weekly collaborative meetings with the rest of the Big Help Mob Mafia (leadership team consisting of an
  • Operations Manager, a Business and Partnerships Manager, a Creative Co-Director and you, the Marketing Manager) to set the marketing strategy
  • Directly managing the marketing team to develop Big Help Mob’s brand, build a rich, sharable database of media/promotion contacts and promote Big Help Mob events and projects through mainstream, online and alternative media.
  • Recruit and manage other marketing volunteers to fill skills and time gaps.

A successful applicant will be:

  • Passionate about making volunteering as mainstream as cheeseburgers and breathing
  • Able to effectively manage and lead a group of volunteers

  • Bring your awesomeness to weekly collaborative meetings with the rest of the Big Help Mob Mafia (leadership team consisting of an Marketing Manager, a Business and Partnerships Manager, a Creative Co-Director and you, the Operations & Logistics Manager)
  • Directly managing the Operations and Logistics team to undertake all operations needed to make Big Help Mob happen safely, smoothly and naturally, including preparing event run sheets, developing safety plans, sourcing all required equipment and coordinating on the day activities, volunteers and Big Help Mob staff.
  • Oversee the development of flash mobs for Big Help Mob and ensure the smooth running of the flash mob on the day.
  • Big Help Mob is made up of two categories of volunteers; captains and sidekicks. To ensure the sommoth running of Big Help Mob you must oversee the development and implementation of captain training and ensure captains have the necessary skills, information and levels of craziness to manage their sidekick cells during Big Help Mob
  • Recruit and manage other volunteers to fill skills and time gaps.

Successful applicant will be

  • Bringing your awesomeness to weekly collaborative meetings with the rest of the Big Help Mob Mafia (leadership team consisting of an Operations Manager, a Business and Partnerships Manager, a Marketing Manager and you, the Creative Co-Director)
  • Directly managing film producer, graphic artist, flash mob creator, photographer and copywriter to produce innovative, high-impact promotional material, marketing campaigns, event experiences (like flash mobs), documentaries and evaluative material to share the impact we’re having with the world 
  • Recruiting and manage other creative volunteers to fill skills and time gaps
  • Collaborating with entire team on the visioning, creation and production of the Big Help Mob toolkit – a hilarious but informative multimedia series of Youtube videos, templates, animations, blogs (and whatever other mediums are useful) that will creatively communicate the “recipe” for making your own Big Help Mob, so that any group of young people can make a Big Help Mob in their community
  • Co-Directing the creative elements of email marketing, branding, film, flash mobs, photography, web design, workshops, promotional material and more

Successful applicants will be:

  • Collaborating with the rest of the Big Help Mob team to "craft" Big Help Mob's activities and events such that they have a positive impact on all stakeholders
  • Making sure all stakeholders' expectations are realistic
  • Contributing findings and experiences to the Big Help Mob toolkit (which will give any other youth-led group in the world the tools to make their own Big Help Mob)
  • Being friendly

A successful applicant will be:

Applicants must be aged between 16 and 30 years old but age is irrelevant if you're within this age bracket.

What you will gain as the Big Help Mob Film Co-Producer/Director:

  • Some serious highs (totally legal) that come from collaborating with seriously talented people to create awesome film clips
  • A network of other ambitious film students from various film schools around Perth
  • The opportunity to build your skills in the the areas of: pre-production, post-production, production, directing, brainstorming, people and project management, leadership, followership, branding, recruitment, scheduling, communication, improvisation (when everything does not go according to plan)
  • A teamwork experience that is very different from the typical sit-around-and-eat-pizza committee: You will work hard but it will pay off.

So what will I be doing for 15 hours per week?

  • (Initially) Working closely with the Big Help Mob Mafia (leadership team), and Big Help Mob’s existing film team to “learn the ropes” and meet relevant Youth Tree volunteer staff.
  • Work with Creative Co-Director and to create clear, detailed artistic visions for film projects and production plans to make them happen
  • Working with the film crew to produce innovative, high-impact marketing material, documentaries and evaluative material to share the impact we are having with the world
  • Collaborating with entire team on the visioning, creation and production of the Big Help Mob toolkit – a hilarious but informative multimedia series of Youtube videos, templates, animations, blogs (and whatever other mediums are useful) that will creatively communicate the “recipe” for making a Big Help Mob, so that any group of young people in the world can make a Big Help Mob in their community
  • Directing and coordinating the film crew on shoots (sound and camera operators) 
  • Reporting to the Big Help Mob Mafia on the progress of productions
  • Recruiting and managing other film volunteers to fill skills and time gaps with support from the Big Help Mob Mafia
  • Ensuring volunteer film crew is well-prepared for shoots and are familiar with key dates in the production schedule
  • Directing post-production from capturing right through to "Youtubifying" of footage

So what will I be doing for 15 hours a week?

  • (Initially) Working closely with the Big Help Mob Operations & Logistics Manager to “learn the ropes” and meeting all the existing Youth Tree volunteer staff
  • Bringing your awesomeness to collaborative meetings with the rest of the Operations & Logistics Team
  • Big Help Mob is made up of two categories of volunteers; Captains and Sidekicks. You will coordinate and inspire the Captains and Sidekicks to ensure they have all the necessary knowledge, resources and excitement they need to create a mind-blowingingly fun Big Help Mob and get the job done.
  • You will organise and run the totally entertaining Superhero School to ensure captains have the necessary skills and sufficient levels of craziness to manage their sidekick cells during Big Help Mob
  • You will assist the Operations and Logistics Manager in undertaking all operations needed to make Big Help Mob happen safely, smoothly and naturally

  • Conducting research to inform and support advocacy
  • Identifying and building links with individuals, not-for-profits, corporates, government and educational institutions to achieve advocacy aims.

Tree Monkey (Business Development Manager)A creative, business-minded people-person who gets excited by the idea that running workshops with a 4.5 metre tree sculpture in all sorts of different institutions can have a positive social impact and be financially sustainable.

The sculpture has enormous potential to be used in a business context to raise awareness of and engage people with social issues and enhance organisations' capacities. Currently it’s gathering dust as it overstays its welcome in different warehouses due to our lack of capacity to consistently run workshops with it.   • Recruiting and then managing a team of workshop volunteers
  • Actively promoting the program through a range of mediums to a variety of organisations as outlined in the Business Plan

TEDxPerth - Film Co-Producer

TEDxPerth is Youth Tree's idea-sharing branch. It is Perth's premier monthly event for young people who are passionate about effecting positive change in the world. Each month at Scitech we show inspirational videos from the TED conference, host guest speakers to share world-changing ideas, host representative speakers from local non-profit organisations, facilitate open discussions around important local and global issues, share food and chat together. TEDxPerth aims to build a more aware, inspired and active young generation in Perth by being the platform for like-minded young people, not-for-profits and incredible thinkers and doers to connect and talk about ways to be part of the solution.

TEDxPerth is run by a core team of dedicated volunteers. The Co-Producers join the core TEDxPerth team and act as the bridge between the core team and the film crew. Talented people from various film schools are recruited into the pool of film crew volunteers on an ongoing basis. Volunteers from this pool then sign up to a project/event each month. So each month the Co-Producer needs to recruit and coordinate a crew made from our volunteer pool. The core TEDxPerth team will give support to make the recruitment simple and clear, but the Co-Producer will be responsible for managing the film crew and producing the film(s) for the month's event to a high standard. TEDxPerth Co-Producers will coordinate with each other to share workload.

  • Assembling the film crew for each month's event from the pool of volunteers and ensuring they are well-prepared for the shoot and are familiar with key dates in the production schedule
  • Attending a TEDxPerth meeting with the core team and the film crew a week before each TEDxPerth event to prepare for the event
  • Directing and coordinating the film crew on the night of the event (sound, camera operators, vision mixing)
  • Attending a TEDxPerth meeting with the core team and the film crew approximately a week after each TEDxPerth event to manage the film crew carrying out editing of the event footage
  • Directing post-production from capturing right through to "Youtubifying" of footage
  • Liaising with and informing the rest of the core TEDxPerth team about the progress of preparation for shooting each TEDxPerth event, and/or editing of the previous event's footage

Talented individuals with experience in camera operation, sound recording and/or post-production and animation will join the Big Help Mob film crew volunteer “pool” and be able to sign up to projects and events regularly. Through this sign-up process, a film crew will be assembled for each project. Working with the Big Help Mob Co-Producer/Director, each project team will consist of:

  • Camera Operators
  • Sound Recordists
  • Editors
  • Animators

The film crew will:

  • Create promotional material for Big Help Mob from existing footage and through workshops with high-school students (filming paint fights etc). This promo material will appear both online and on the Big Screen as cinema advertising. 
  • Film our insane flash mobs to create viral online videos
  • Film entire Big Help Mob events, capturing both the scale and detail, and gathering critical feedback from interviews and vox pops.
  • Collaborating with entire team on the production of the Big Help Mob toolkit – a hilarious but informative series of Youtube videos (think studio-work, dorky animations, interviews and stupid role-plays) that will creatively communicate the “recipe” for making a Big Help Mob, so that any group of young people in the world can make a Big Help Mob in their community.
  • Produce all work online as succinct, engaging Youtube videos to share with the world

So what would I be doing for 20-25 hours a week?

  • (Initially) Working closely with the Big Help Mob Mafia (leadership team) to “learn the ropes”, and meeting all the existing Youth Tree volunteer staff
  • Bring your awesomeness to weekly collaborative meetings with the rest of the Big Help Mob Mafia (leadership team consisting of an
  • Operations Manager, a Business and Partnerships Manager, a Creative Co-Director and you, the Marketing Manager) to set the marketing strategy
  • Directly managing the marketing team to develop Big Help Mob’s brand, build a rich, sharable database of media/promotion contacts and promote Big Help Mob events and projects through mainstream, online and alternative media.
  • Recruit and manage other marketing volunteers to fill skills and time gaps.

A successful applicant will be:

  • Passionate about making volunteering as mainstream as cheeseburgers and breathing
  • Able to effectively manage and lead a group of volunteers
  • A pinnacle of integrity with high levels of professionalism and attention to detail
  • An innovative thinker who can develop and direct crazy marketing and promotional ideas
  • Deeply knowledgeable of the web, and cutting edge trends in social media
  • Interested in collaborating and learning from others, sharing ideas, expertise and workload
  • Passionate about youth innovation and volunteering
  • An amazing communicator in verbal and written form
  • Flexible with their time – available for weekly meetings and able to adapt to the needs of their volunteer collaborators
