Hindi kaya ayaw nilang magulo ang "history" nila. Anyway, we are still hopeful that the POPE can visit the PHILIPPINES in his lifetime!

    Dear George,

    Earlier today, the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners selected Alissa Keny-Guyer to fill out the remainder of my term as State Representative from Oregon's House District 46.

    I couldn't be more pleased. Alissa has been a tenacious and effective advocate on a range of issues, including health care and early education. Her diverse resume includes helping steer flood recovery efforts in Vernonia and serving on the boards of the Northwest Health Foundation and the Multnomah County Commission on Children and Families. She has lived and worked internationally; she has volunteered in her children's schools; she has cultivated political leaders from among under-represented parts of our community. Alissa's work has been wide-ranging, but it all reflects her steadfast commitment to justice, to equality, and to empowering others.

    I worked with hundreds of paid lobbyists in Salem. Few were as effective as Alissa was as a volunteer.

    Notwithstanding Alissa's considerable intellect, compassion, and conviction, I believe her success as a legislator will depend to a large extent on you.     Today, President Obama was at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California for a discussion on putting America back to work with members of LinkedIn, the world's largest professional network with more than 120 million users worldwide. LinkedIn members from Gainesville, Florida to Phoenix, Arizona submitted their questions on the economy and jobs for the President to answer during the live Town Hall.

    LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner kicked off the Town Hall, noting the role of passing the American Jobs Act in putting the country back to work:




    There's one number you may be less familiar with, and that's 3.2 million, the number of available jobs in this country -- 3.2 million. We have everything we need to begin to put this country back to work -- the raw materials, the basic building blocks and, perhaps most importantly, the will of a nation. What we need is the way. With the American Jobs Act, our President is leading the way.

    Then he turned it over to President Obama to say a few words before diving into questions:




    As you mentioned, I put forward a proposal, the American Jobs Act, that would put thousands of teachers back into the classrooms who have been laid off due to downturns in state and local budgets; that would make sure that we are rebuilding our infrastructure -- taking extraordinary numbers of construction workers who have been laid off when the housing bubbles went bust and putting them to work rebuilding our roads and our airports and our schools, and laying broadband lines -- all the things that help us make a success; and also make sure that we’re providing small businesses the kinds of tax incentives that will allow them to hire and allow them to succeed.

    During the discussion, the President addressed topics ranging from Social Security and Medicare to strengthening our education system and ways to jumpstart the economy. He also addressed the need to invest in our future and pay for those investments in part by making sure everyone, including the wealthiest among us, is contributing a fair share:




    If we don’t prepare our people with the skills that they need to compete, we’re going to have problems. If we don’t make sure that we continue to have the best infrastructure in the world, we’re going to have problems. If we’re not continuing to invest in basic research, we’re going to have challenges. If we don’t get our fiscal house in order in a way that is fair and equitable so that everybody feels like they have responsibilities to not only themselves and their family but also the country that’s given them so much opportunity, we’re going to have problems.




    And so I am extraordinarily confident about America’s long-term future. But we are going to have to make some decisions about how we move forward. And what’s striking to me is, when we’re out of Washington and I’m just talking to ordinary folks, I don’t care whether they’re Republicans or Democrats, people are just looking for common sense. The majority of people agree with the prescriptions I just offered. The majority of people by a wide margin think we should be rebuilding our infrastructure. The majority of folks by a wide margin think that we should be investing in education. The majority of people by a wide margin think we should be investing in science and technology. And the majority of people think by a wide margin that we should be maintaining programs like Social Security and Medicare to provide a basic safety net.




    The majority of people by a significant margin think that the way we should close our deficit is a balance of cutting out those things that we don’t need, but also making sure that we’ve got a tax code that’s fair and everybody is paying their fair share.

    President Obama concluded by saying, "that's why your voices are going to be so important." The President called on those who had joined the conversation to keep making their voices heard:




    I want to hear from you directly, but I also want your voices heard in the halls of Congress. I need everybody here to be speaking out on behalf of the things that you care about, and the values that made this country great, and to say to folks who you’ve elected -- say to them, we expect you to act responsibly, and not act in terms of short-term political interest. Act in terms of what’s going to be good for all of us over the long term.

We have a classmate named Lilibeth Ranillo(kapangalan nga ng kapatid ni Mat Ranillo III at Suzette Ranillo kaya naaalala ko) and I can vouch exactly that she is the one on the photo! We do not have a Rosa Mananquil classmate because the name of our Mananquil classmate is Alicia Mananquil(from Caburnay) and on lower section they have Aida Mananquil. And in case you have forgotten that Marilyn Tuazon has transferred to another school since Grade 4, she is definitely a "misplaced" in this photo! The faxed message was received by Raj S. Hari of Immigration Canada in Calgary and it expedited my travel between the two cities.   • George Palaganas Actually the faxed message(Project Isabela plane ticket) was a "magic" fax since Raj used a blank 8 1/2 x 11 bond paper(clear) , raised it on the air and the faxed message were transcribed on it. "Paper Switching" style. Raj is "listed" as immortal.

    A Fun On A Summer Where

    It happened one summer with a piece of junk
    dusty and full of cobwebs on the corner
    all it need is to see the light of day
    out from the garage for its two wheels to startle.

    It started on the empty streets around the neighborhood
    but none was there to notice except kids selling Kool-Aid of lemon
    and from the kitchen came-out a bagful of sandwiches
    for a longer trek, hug all sleep to dismantle.

    Coming upon a tiny house near a dead railroad
    and before arriving to an old theater in Dunbar
    a hump to avoid, a downslope to throttle
    on freehands till downtown I scramble.

    Stopping by the roadside overlooking the English Bay
    next to a girl busy with a paperback
    a munch of bread, a look at the shoreline
    for on the ship in large letters, Symphony of Fire it was written.

    Passing by Kitsilano's Malone restaurant
    and earnest sunbathers reclining on turfs and green
    off I go to nearby Jericho
    a trailer by the sea is all that I find.

    The slopes at UBC is a real hard climb
    but the view of Wreck Beach from the top is a breath-taker
    scattered floating timbers, the steepest cliff
    and on your thought, a wrecked ship! from the Galeons of old time.

    It was not for long before a pack of sports riders
    pass before me oblivious of silence
    off they go, laughing, boisterously talking
    knowing at downhill, it will be all a free-wheel drive.

    Then the moment has come for me to be home in Marpole
    so with the junk I retrace my path to French and Granville
    Pink as it is, for it was designed for a lady
    but it was my ticket to a fun on a summer where.

    “I’m thrilled to be here on what is an exciting day,” said the President as he prepared to sign the Small Business Jobs Act this afternoon. With small business owners who will receive tax breaks and better access to credit in the audience, the President explained to everybody why he has fought so long for it:




    Now this is important because small businesses produce most of the new jobs in this country. They are the anchors of our Main Streets. They are part of the promise of America – the idea that if you’ve got a dream and you’re willing to work hard, you can succeed. That’s what leads a worker to leave a job to become her own boss. That’s what propels a basement inventor to sell a new product – or an amateur chef to open a restaurant. It’s this promise that has drawn millions to our shores and made our economy the envy of the world.

    The bill includes a series of small business proposals that the President put forth earlier this year, and small businesses will start benefiting from the bill on day one. Among the many important provisions in the bill, twelve of the top benefits to small businesses are:




    * Extension of Successful SBA Recovery Loan Provisions —Immediately Supporting Loans to Over 1,400 Small Businesses: With funds provided in the bill, SBA will begin funding new Recovery loans within a few days of the President’s signature, starting with the more than 1,400 businesses – with loans totaling more than $730 million – that are waiting in the Recovery Loan Queue. In total, the extension of these provisions provides the capacity to support $14 billion in loans to small businesses. The SBA Recovery loan provisions have already supported $30 billion in lending to over 70,000 small business.



    * A More Than Doubling of the Maximum Loan Size for The Largest SBA Programs:The bill also increases the maximum loan size for SBA loan programs, which in the coming weeks will allow more small businesses to access more credit to allow them to expand and create new jobs. The bill will permanently raise the maximum size for SBA’s two largest loan programs, increasing the maximum 7(a) and 504 loans from $2 million to $5 million, and the maximum 504 manufacturing related loan from $4 million to $5.5 million. In addition, it will temporarily increase the maximum loan size for SBA Express loans from $350,000 to $1 million, providing greater access to working capital loans that small businesses use to purchase new inventory and take on their next order – allowing them to create new jobs.



    * A New $30 Billion Small Business Lending Fund:The bill would establish a new $30 billion Small Business Lending Fund which – by providing capital to small banks with incentives to increase small business lending – could support several multiples of that amount in new credit.



    * An Initiative to Strengthen Innovative State Small Business Programs – Supporting Over $15 Billion in Lending:The bill will support at least $15 billion in small business lending through a new State Small Business Credit Initiative, strengthening state small business programs that leverage private-sector lenders to extend additional credit – many of which have been forced to cut back due to budget cuts.



    * Eight New Small Business Tax Cuts – Effective Today, Providing Immediate Incentives to Invest: The President had already signed into law eight small business tax cuts, and on Monday, he is signing into law another eight new tax cuts that go into effect immediately.



    o Zero Taxes on Capital Gains from Key Small Business Investments:Under the Recovery Act, 75 percent of capital gains on key small business investments this year were excluded from taxes. The Small Business Jobs Act temporarily puts in place for the rest of 2010 a provision called for by the President – elimination of all capital gains taxes on these investments if held for five years. Over one million small businesses are eligible to receive investments this year that, if held for five years or longer, could be completely excluded from any capital gains taxation.



    o Extension and Expansion of Small Businesses’ Ability to Immediately Expense Capital Investments: The bill increases for 2010 and 2011 the amount of investments that businesses would be eligible toimmediately write off to $500,000, while raising the level of investments at which the write-off phases out to $2 million. Prior to the passage of the bill, the expensing limit would have been $250,000 this year, and only $25,000 next year. This provision means that 4.5 million small businesses and individuals will be able to make new business investments today and know that they will earn a larger break on their taxes for this year.



    o Extension of 50% Bonus Depreciation:The bill extends – as the President proposed in his budget – a Recovery Act provision for 50 percent “bonus depreciation” through 2010, providing 2 million businesses, large and small, with the ability to make new investmentstoday and know they can receive a tax cut for this year by accelerating the rate at which they deduct capital expenditures.



    o A New Deduction of Health Insurance Costs for Self-Employed:The bill allows 2 million self-employed to know that on their taxes for this year, they can get a deduction for the cost of health insurance for themselves and their family members in calculating their self-employment taxes. This provision is estimated to provide over $1.9 billion in tax cuts for these entrepreneurs.



    o Tax Relief and Simplification for Cell Phone Deductions:The bill changes rules so that the use of cell phones can be deducted without burdensome extra documentation – making it easier for virtually every small business in America to receive deductions that they are entitled to, beginning on their taxes for this year.



    o An Increase in the Deduction for Entrepreneurs’ Start-Up Expenses:The bill temporarily increases the amount of start-up expenditures entrepreneurs can deductfrom their taxesfor this year from $5,000 to $10,000 (with a phase-out threshold of $60,000 in expenditures), offering an immediate incentive for someone with a new business idea to invest in starting up a new small business today.



    o A Five-Year Carryback Of General Business Credits:The bill would allow certain small businesses to “carry back” their general business credits to offset five years of taxes – providing them with a break on their taxes for this year – while also allowing these credits to offset the Alternative Minimum Tax, reducing taxes for these small businesses.



    o Limitations on Penalties for Errors in Tax Reporting That Disproportionately Affect Small Business:The bill would change, beginning this year, the penalty for failing to report certain tax transactions from a fixed dollar amount – which was criticized for imposing a disproportionately large penalty on small businesses in certain circumstances – to a percentage of the tax benefits from the transaction.

      The application period for the Spring 2011 program is now open. Applicants have until October 3, 2010 to apply for a Spring 2011 White House Internship. Please read instructions below and refer to our FAQ page for additional explanations.

      The following are important questions to ask yourself before and after submitting your internship application. The link to apply can be found at the bottom of this page, but please read all instructions before starting your application.
      Am I eligible to apply for a White House Internship?

      All White House Internship Program participants must be:




      * United States citizens



      * At least 18 years of age on or before the first day of the internship



      * Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college, community college or university OR graduated in the past two years from undergraduate or graduate program at a college, community college or university



      OR



      * A veteran of the United States Armed forces who possesses a high school diploma or its equivalent and has served on active duty at any time over the past two years

      Am I available for the Spring 2011 internship program?

      All White House Interns are expected to intern full-time for the entire term of the program:
