Dear Friend,

Thank you for signing up to get updates from the 2012 Democratic National Convention Host Committee. By registering on our website, you have been entered to win airfare and accommodations for the week of the convention next September.

We are doing things very differently here in Charlotte -- we are working hard to make sure that this is the most open and accessible convention in history. Like President Obama's campaign, this convention is people powered. We already have thousands of people, like you, from all over the country who have signed up.

I am proud to be a part of this convention and I'm glad you have joined our movement. Now you can show your pride by visiting the official 2012 Convention merchandise store.

I look forward to sharing this journey with you. Thank you for signing up and thank you for being a part of this historic convention. As we progress towards September 2012, I'll be sending more updates, contests, and ways you can stay involved.

Sincerely,

Foxx signature

Lowly Coffee Trees and Vine
by Cool Dela Peña

Dry and dusty road scamper my solidified embraces
of morning awakenings in summer liasons
Dandelions and wild berries race for spaces
Equestrian pipes locates this side.

Cupcakes in butter and pancakes with rye
The smell of brilliant breakfast is a sillified supine
Remember when mulberries are mulberries
rather than artificial beet crushed in pine.

Lowly coffee trees and vine, engulfs my desire
Orchard of beauty like grapevines entwined
Parched discipline in a sequence of charm
Ever creates a dainty incline.

Lowly Coffee trees and vine, makes a lazy magic divine
Growing sentiments of nurtured silence
Heaped grace and superior design
ever restores this homegrown ensign.

October 15, 2009 at 3:43am ·

Sadness is an understatement of what we have felt upon hearing the news on the ill-fated Bell412 Presidential Helicopter that crashed at Barrio Tinoc Ifugao on the lenten week of 2009. The pilot, Philippine Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Ronaldo Sacatani has been a classmate at Tarlac College of Technology now the Tarlac State University in 1990 before he and another TSU student, Christopher Magdangal, a freshman engineering student, entered the portals of the Philippine Military Academy after hurdling the tough academy exams. To the bereaved family of Lieutenant Colonel Ronaldo Sacatani, Condolences from TSU BSEE Batch 1992.

By Li-an de la Cruz-Busto

I WAS already halfway through writing another article when I heard about two former colleagues who piloted the presidential chopper that crashed Tuesday afternoon the other week in Tinoc, Ifugao. I decided to change course and instead write about the two pilots whom I personally knew. Men I have shared a unit with at the Philippine Air Force.

I wanted to believe that they were alive, well, and were just waiting to be rescued in the vast area of Ifugao where they were believed to have flown to before they went down with the chopper together with the other people on board.

(maimed content, 15 words only here on this spot.)

But the painful confirmation that the helicopter wreckage and the bodies had just been sighted was made over the TV from the Ifugao Governor himself.

Major Ronaldo Sacatani and I used to be in the same squadron when I was still assigned in Sangley Point in Cavite City. I had the privilege of flying with him as his co-pilot in the MD 520 MG helicopter. I must say he was a very passionate pilot who laid down the prerequisites before every flight. He always came prepared for every mission and flight, whether it was combat or administrative flights.

In fact, when another colleague told me that Major Sacatani was the pilot in command of the Bell 412 presidential helicopter, I brushed off reports that they were missing and had most likely crashed. With Sir Ronnie, I was sure the flight plan would be very detailed, taking into consideration all factors involved prior to performing a particular mission. I should know because I have flown with him a couple of times, and I knew that he follows flight plans religiously.

Captain Alvin Alegata, on the other hand, was a colleague who belonged to another squadron. Like me, he hailed from Mindanao, from the cities of Davao and Tagum. I may not have flown with him but when it came to fostering camaraderie, he was the one person who went beyond affiliations, whether one was from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) or not.

Both pilots have since been assigned with the elite 250th Presidential Airlift Wing after going through schoolings and trainings.

Although I knew both pilots, who were graduates of PMA Classes 1994 and 1996, it was Captain Alegata whom I had a chance to talk to more often before. We were neighbors at the air base, and because he was a fellow Bisaya and I could very well talk to him about anything in our local dialect.

The soft-spoken Captain Alegata would usually talk about his pride in seeing his siblings through school. He was, after all, their manong, and he took that role seriously. I knew it took him a little while to pursue his personal life, only after making sure that his siblings had become stable.

Like a manong that he was to his family, he soon had a family of his own after getting married to a pathologist and having two children. He was a doting tatay to his first child, and I would often see him walking his little four-year-old daughter (his other child is a five-month-old baby girl, having been christened just two weeks before the crash) at the base's park.

These are among my vivid recollections of Sir Alvin. And this is also the apprehension that I think of when his little girl looks forward to the walks or bonding moments that she used to spend with her father.

As for Sir Ronnie, I know it will be as difficult for his wife whom he loved dearly and spoke fondly of. His wife was always his joy and love, and had always been the topic of his conversations every time anybody gets the chance to be deployed on field assignments with him. They also looked like newlyweds because of the love and laughter they both shared when they were together. His wife works as a nurse overseas and would come home regularly.

These are always the heart-wrenching stories I hear when former colleagues do not come home to their families after a mission. I, too, have had a number of classmates and other colleagues who failed to come home.

This is the harsh reality of being pilots who consider ourselves already half-dead after taking off for every mission.
